Frequently Asked Questions

What is the High Performance Taekwondo Program?

The High Performance Program is an advanced taekwondo training program designed for athletes who want to compete at a higher level. It focuses on elite technical skills, physical conditioning, mental performance, and competition preparation for sparring and poomsae.

The High Performance Program is open to students who are genuinely committed to competitive sparring and have reached a minimum rank of intermediate belt (or have prior competitive experience in another martial art). Athletes must demonstrate strong fundamentals, a disciplined work ethic, and the ability to train at an elevated intensity. All prospective members are evaluated through a brief tryout or coach recommendation to ensure the program remains focused and competitive. While younger athletes are welcome, maturity and focus matter more than age or belt rank alone.

Yes, this program is designed specifically for athletes who intend to compete in Olympic-style sparring tournaments. While you don’t need to be a seasoned champion to join, you should have a genuine desire to compete at local, regional, or national levels. That said, the training will still improve your overall Taekwondo skills, fitness, and discipline—so even if you’re not currently competing, you’ll benefit. However, if you have no interest in tournaments, this program may not be the right fit. We recommend our regular sparring classes for recreational students who want to spar without the competition focus.
The program focuses exclusively on Olympic-style sparring (Kyorugi) as recognized by World Taekwondo (WT). Training covers essential components such as advanced footwork and movement, strategic distance control, timing and rhythm, combination kicking techniques, counter-attacking drills, defensive skills, and tactical fight planning. We also incorporate competition-specific elements including video analysis, sparring strategy, conditioning for multiple rounds, and mental preparation for tournaments. While traditional Taekwondo forms and fundamentals are respected, this program is purely dedicated to sparring performance and competition readiness.

Regular Taekwondo classes focus on well-rounded development, including forms (poomsae), basic techniques, self-defense, discipline, and general fitness. The High Performance Program, however, is solely dedicated to Olympic-style sparring competition. Training is faster-paced, more intense, and competition-focused—with an emphasis on strategy, timing, footwork, and conditioning for tournament rounds. While regular classes are open to all ages and skill levels, this program is invitation or tryout-based and demands a higher level of commitment, attendance, and athletic intensity. Think of regular classes as the foundation, and this program as the specialized track for competitive sparring athletes.

Athletes are expected to train a minimum of three to four days per week in dedicated High Performance sparring sessions. The program operates on a year-round schedule with increased training frequency leading up to major tournaments. Consistent attendance is critical, as each session builds on the previous one—missed classes can quickly put athletes behind. For those serious about competing at a high level, many of our top athletes train five to six days per week.

Yes, all prospective athletes must complete a skills assessment and trial class before being accepted into the High Performance Program. The evaluation covers fundamental sparring techniques, footwork, fitness level, coachability, and overall attitude. This is not a pass or fail test in the traditional sense—rather, it helps us determine if the athlete is ready for the intensity of the program and if the program is the right fit for them. The trial also gives the athlete and their family a chance to see what the program demands before committing. To schedule an assessment, simply contact us and we’ll set up a time.

The High Performance Program is open to athletes ages 8 and up, with no strict upper age limit as long as the individual can safely and effectively handle the training intensity. Younger athletes (ages 8–12) are placed in development-focused groups that emphasize proper technique, footwork, and competition fundamentals. Teens and adults train in more advanced groups with faster-paced drilling, strategic sparring, and higher conditioning demands. Ultimately, maturity, focus, and commitment matter more than age alone—each athlete is evaluated individually to ensure they are placed in the right training environment.

Absolutely. Competition preparation is the primary focus of the High Performance Program. Training includes tournament-specific drills, sparring strategy, video analysis, ring movement, and conditioning for multiple rounds. We also help athletes navigate registration, weight management, bracket strategy, and mental preparation leading up to events. Many athletes in the program compete in local, provincial, national or international level tournaments throughout the year. Whether you’re preparing for your first local tournament or aiming for a national podium, the program is designed to have you competition-ready.
Athletes in the High Performance Program develop essential life skills that extend far beyond the mat. These include mental toughness and resilience under pressure, discipline and time management, goal setting and accountability, and the ability to handle both victory and defeat with grace. They also build leadership skills, learn to work as part of a team, and develop a strong work ethic that carries into school, work, and everyday life. Ultimately, the program shapes not just better competitors, but more confident, focused, and determined individuals.
Applying is simple. Start by contacting our front desk or filling out the inquiry form on our website to express your interest. From there, we’ll schedule a brief consultation to discuss your athlete’s goals, experience, and readiness for the program. Next, we’ll arrange a skills assessment and trial class to evaluate fundamentals, fitness, and overall fit. After the trial, we’ll provide feedback and either offer acceptance into the program or recommend additional preparation before reapplying. Spaces are limited, so we encourage interested families to reach out as soon as possible.
The Canadian High Performance Taekwondo Centre (CHPTC) is an organization dedicated to supporting elite Taekwondo athletes across Canada. Its mission focuses on three key areas: providing world-class training programs, supporting holistic athlete development through sports science and mental performance resources, and offering financial aid to help cover travel, equipment, and competition costs. The CHPTC aims to prepare athletes to represent their communities, provinces, and country at the highest national and international levels. While Dragon Taekwondo’s Elite High Performance Program focuses on daily sparring training and competition preparation, the Canadian High Performance Taekwondo Centre (CHPTC) acts as a broader support system for elite athletes across the country—offering financial aid, sports science resources, and mental performance training. Many athletes in our program may eventually benefit from CHPTC resources as they advance to national-level competitions. We are happy to help families navigate that pathway when the time is right.
